The original "League of Friends" was founded in the 1980s to support the Stone House Care Home and Hospital, which were at the time under shared management by the NHS and the Shropshire County Council. The Friends used to provide drivers to deliver hot "Meals on Wheels", a service which has since sadly been lost.

When it was realised that there were also many elderly and vulnerable people being supported at home, it was decided to extend the support of the Friends to these people in Bishop's Castle and the wider area, and to change the name of the Friends to include "in the Community".
